Company History
C & R Asphalt, LLC. originated in Bryan Ohio, a small town in northwest Ohio about 40 miles from Toledo. Started by Steve Coleman and Rick Roy in 1989 (1 year after graduating from high school). The idea came from a college friend of Steve Coleman’s who sealed driveways with his younger brother in Syracuse, NY over the summers. Steve and Rick graduated from 5 gallon pails purchased at the hardware store to 55 gallon drums of concentrated sealer mixed by a 1980 model paint mixer. Steve and Rick both worked on the Ohio Turnpike during the day in road maintenance as a summer job. In the evenings and weekends, they sealed small driveways and parking lots until 1990 when Steve graduated from Pikeville College and moved to Lexington for a restaurant management position. After less than one year, Steve decided the restaurant business wasn’t for him.
He went to work for a local contractor for 5 months and decided to try things on his own. The Fall of 1993 was his first job as Lexington’s’ version of C & R Asphalt, striping the Toyota Manufacturing test track in Georgetown, KY. A new striper was purchased just for the project. In 1994, Steve started sealing out of an old 280 gallon tank. After a year of several larger jobs and a lot of headaches, Steve re-invested money and bought newer, larger equipment.
Meanwhile, Rick had gotten out of the military and became an electrician. After coming down for a break between jobs, Rick never left. He and Steve decided to officially reform C & R Asphalt, LLC and try to break into the full scale paving business. They purchased into and eventually bought a small paving company in the area and officially reformed the company to a C & R Asphalt, LLC in 1998.
C & R Asphalt, LLC started with only 1 full time (uncertain) owner and currently employees approx. 65 people. We have had strong sales growth each year. For
2008 sales over 14 million mark and we will have
installed approx. 10 million square feet of asphalt. With essentially all new equipment and our quality office and field staff, we expect to continue with an aggressive growth curve.
In 2002 we expanded into
Asphalt & Concrete Recycling. We
currently recycle over 100,000 tons a year.
Instead of filling our local city dump sites. these materials are
reused for sub base and/or roads, farm lanes, etc.
Due to our hard work, and commitment to doing quality work for our customers, we have grown to be the largest private (non highway) paving and pavement maintenance contractor in Central Kentucky, both sales and volume of materials installed.
Here at C & R Asphalt, LLC., we love paving so much, we jokingly call ourselves
For 2008 our sales
exceeded 14 million and we will have installed approx. 10 million square
feet of asphalt.
